
HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai launched the trial operation of Dubai Metro on September 20, 2008 and witnessed the test run on the Red line between Jebel Ali and Ibn Batuta stations. According to WAM, HH Sheikh Mohammed was accompanied by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, Dubai Deputy Ruler, H.E. Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, Lt. General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Commander General of Dubai Police, Khalifa Saeed Sulaiman, Director of Dubai Protocol Department, senior officials and the engineering and technical teams of the Metro.Matar Mohammed Al Tayer, Chairman and CEO of Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), briefed Sheikh Mohammed on the Jebel Ali Station, one of 24 elevated stations with a capacity for 11,000 passengers per hour. The 130-meter long and 30-meter wide station has two entrances equipped with escalators and lifts. The train on trial consists of five coaches and can accommodate up to 643 passengers. Al Tayer said that 19 pedestrian crossings will be installed on the Sheikh Zayed Road to ease traffic for the metro commuters. Shaikh Mohammed also launched the wireless internet for the trains and the stations. Once completed, the AED15.5 billion Dubai Metro will be the world's largest automated driverless metro system, with Green and Red Lines extending 75 kilometers and consisting of 47 stations, including 10 underground stations.
